Fame vs Skills (mainstream?)
Ladies and Gentlemen, now I introduce “Clockwork of Time,” written by Danish band Illnath.
Be honest with your first feelings. This song is GOOD.
I got to know this band recently, and I am in love with them. Every time I listen to this song, I feel as if my soul is being cleansed.
and… how many people knows this band? There are heck a lot of metal-maniacs in the world who are ready to listen to another ear-ripping music, and why isn’t Illnath recognized? There are rarely any videos of Illnath in Youtube, and all the view numbers are around 200-300. Pretty sad stats. This band is praised as the “strengths of Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth” (which are my favorites also) and this band is yet no more than a mere underground.
The same Danish artist Within Temptation is way more famous, but I call that song qualities of Illnath are better.
Last Autumn’s Dream, which is a band i’m currently writing a review of, they’re not even in Youtube. However, their songs like Pages and Skyscraper melt down my brain and heart.
After listening to these ‘underground’ and ‘minor’ music, some mainstream in MTV like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park and all those pop, rap look like the sissies of music branch.
Their songs are not sophisticated, have no meanings, and seem to have taken much less effort.
Some artists devoted to skills had managed to become popular, but that was since they touched the territory of ‘mainstream.’
It’s more than it’s because they’re in different genre’s.
Seems like someone who wants to be a musician should choose between path of Fame and Skill.

such is the tough life of a musician
Yes… that’s why I value all those people who show passion in music even they know all about the risks
Lol, I forgot you like this type of music too. You were the one that listened to Sonata Arctica right?
I think Illnath isn’t really popular even in the metal crowd because they seem slightly wannabe to me. Their vocal style seems a little imitative of Rhapsody (worse actually, considering you can’t hear what he’s saying at all) while their instrumentals (the keyboard mainly) seems to be a cheap rip off of Dragon Force. With all those other Finnish bands(I just have to mention Nightwish here) Illnath just doesn’t make the cut.
But you’re right on the issue of popularity of this type of music in general. The thing about metal is that it’s pretty hectic, and in this day and age where simplicity is popular (just look at the design of our Macbooks) the intricacies of power metal just aren’t truly appreciated.
nah, i just call Illnath is more underground-ish and more extreme. They’re all just in ’similar’ genre, they can’t help being similar to each other at one point or other. Only difference I think is that Sonata Arctica and Nightwish have some popularized songs (Nemo charted something like top 20 in Pop), and Illnath just doesn’t have any songs that everyone would listen to.
But I like Illnath; they definitely have a separate taste from those metal gods you’ve mentioned. most of their songs in their third album were good (i listened all of them in hottracks=p)
